The Covid-19 pandemic has made life difficult for people across all kinds of industries and artists are certainly not immune. For small artists who usually make their money and reach out to customers by selling at local markets, it’s been a very challenging few months.
In Your Area recently shared how one gallery in Penzance is helping Cornish artists at this time, with director at the Daisy Laing gallery Kate Jones telling the news provider that she decided she wanted to run a collaborative project to help local artists who might be struggling.
She has worked closely with six artists to produce special edition limited print T-shirts featuring their work. Unusually, each design was hand screen printed onto the recycled cotton T-shirts, which means there are just 16 T-shirts of each artists’ design.
“With galleries closed during lockdown many artists have struggled to maintain their income, so I wanted to create a project that would allow them to receive at least some return for their work quite quickly,” Ms Jones explained.
She also said that she hopes the project benefits customers, who may be struggling to justify spending money on original art during the current situation. “I like the idea of affordable, wearable art,” she added.
If you’re an artist looking for an alternative way to reach customers and share your art with the world, then creating prints of your pieces and printing them onto different types of merchandise could be a great way to give people an affordable option for enjoying your work every day.
Clothing is just one option. There are also custom stickers, mousemats, mugs and even greetings cards.
